Growing Herbs in a Sunny Kitchen

Herbs are among the most versatile plants on the planet. Not only do many hold magical healing powers, they flavour our meals to perfection, and can fill a room with a scent of the mediterranean, the orient, or even a plesant cottage garden.

With such the gift of such fragrances, why banish herbs to the garden when they can feature on the interior window sill or bench of your sunny kitchen? You only need to brush a hand over them and your kitchen will be instantly filled with their fresh aroma.

You could place herbs in individual pots or together in a tub. Planting a selection of herbs together, ranging in textures, leaf size, and scent creates a wonderful display.

Herbs that will love a sunny position in your kitchen and don’t need much water include:

  • catnip
  • alecost
  • thyme
  • lavender
  • calamint

Herbs for your sunny kitchen that like damp soil include:

  • comfrey
  • lovage
  • rocket
  • marshmallow
  • salad burnet
  • carraway
  • angelica

Parsley and chives will happily mix with your other herbs, and can easily be added to dishes to enhance flavour or as a garnish. You might decide to plant a variety of the one herb together, such as the different mints – Lemon Mint, Spearmint, Pennyroyal, Peppermint and Apple Mint. Then again, Basil might interest you with Greek Basil, Bush Basil, Sweet Basil, and Cinnamon Basil.

Even a large pot with a strawberry plant will love your sunny kitchen sill. Remember, your herbs will benefit from some fresh air – as will you – so open your kitchen windows now and then to nature’s gift of fresh air.

Further brighten your sunny kitchen with the sight and smell of herbs.
