1

Splashes of colour can make or break a modern kitchen design and an experienced designer will know just how much – or how little – to use to make a space that suits the home as well as the personality of the homeowners. This modern kitchen design is a great example of a fantastic balance between colour that ‘pops’ and a neutral background. Note the bulkhead which matches the curve of the island peninsula and creates a visual border between this modern kitchen and the adjoining rooms.

Neutral tones are perfect in a modern style kitchen and, when several shades are combined, can be highly visually effective. As a general rule, your designer will stick to darker tones for base cupboards and lighter tones for wall cupboards to create, as this example shows, a fabulous sense of aesthetic balance. The simple addition of a wood grain feature at the end of the island creates an inviting ambiance while the contemporary light fittings above add to the modern design.

A simple design for a modern kitchen design will ensure you end up with a space that is practical and functional with classic appeal that will stand the test of time. Kitchen design ideas can come from many places and the best kitchens are always a combination of designer expertise coupled with a homeowner’s personality. The example below (left) features a single bank of purple cabinets with a feature granite benchtop against crisp, white cabinetry.

The layout of a modern kitchen will have a massive impact on how effective it contributes to the way you live and entertain. Take the example pictured – the G-shaped kitchen is designed around a central island which is accessible from all sides. A tall bank of cabinetry provides maximum storage while a clever study nook is a great place for homework. And look at all the storage in the island – every centimetre is maximised.
